Nuna's Origin Story

The story of big sister

The experience motivated Jini to help others. She founded Nuna–which means “big sister”–in honor of Kimong, and the caregivers who support their own Kimongs.

National Medicaid Data

Due to Jini’s work saving healthcare.gov, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) entrusted Nuna with the creation of the country’s first Medicaid dataset and data pipeline. They got it done on time, and on budget with a small group of 75 people.

Our founder’s beginnings

As a child, Jini Kim faced the challenge of her brother Kimong’s severe autism, later complicated by grand mal seizures. Recently immigrated to America, Jini’s family depended on her English fluency to navigate the healthcare system.

At the age of 9, she enrolled him on Medicaid to ensure he received the necessary support.

A Crisis Averted

Jini was part of a small team of people who were called to Maryland to help save healthcare.gov. After months of intense work, they were able to put healthcare.gov back on track.

Nuna Today

Nuna’s outstanding abilities in engineering and data science caught the attention of several ambitious healthcare leaders who partnered with Nuna to build the common financial innovation and operating platform for value-based care, making Nuna what we are today. That work is the foundation of the Nuna App everyone sees today.
